Planning to probing strategy

To develop the customer’s awareness of a need in order to identify opportunities we need to plan a probing strategy employing open and closed probes to determine the following

Probing about facts – of the customer’s current circumstances focuses on opportunities for your product or service which could be helpful. Specific information “facts” is gathered to indicate a problem or condition that can be addressed. As the customers don’t always reveal the opportunities you might seek factual information about the customer’s current:

Products/suppliers

  • “How is the connectivity working now”
  • “What are the companies who provides the components”

Problems

“What are the specific problems with the fridge”

  • “Have you ever been satisfied with the service ”

Plans

  • “What projects do you need to work on an urgent basis”
  • “Do you have a back up plan in case that doesn’t work”

The more you know about the customer’s situation the easier it will be for you to probe the areas of opportunity plus always listen for ways your product or service can make a difference.

Probing about impact – is about your exploration of the customer’s situation for opportunities. When the facts given by the customer indicates an opportunity with your product to change the customer’s circumstances, you have to probe to determine how the facts impact the customer. In this way both you and the customer sees the importance or the opportunity. You may ask about….

The customer’s feelings about his/her situation

  • “How do you feel about it”
  • “I s that kind of service up to the mark”

The magnitude of the problem

  • “Does it reoccur often”
  • “Is that a big issue”

The effects of the current situation on the customer or others

  • “How does it affect the customers”
  • “How do the employees feel about it”

This helps you assess the importance of an opportunity and it increases the customer’s awareness of its importance.

Probing to confirm a need – the customer tells you about a problem he/she is facing or is not happy with the service provider but doesn’t express a desire to change or improve anything. When he/she has not expressed a need the importance of using a closed probe heightens to confirm that a customer does in fact have a need. After the facts of a customer’s situation and the impact of the subsequent facts have on the customer you may determine the next step which is to find out if the customer has a need and wants to do something about it. To confirm the existence of a need, use closed probes which is the language of needs

  • “Are you interested is solving that problem”
  • “Would you like to upgrade your systems to make it fast ”
  • “Would you require extra financing to clear out the bad loans”

Unless you confirm the customer wants to do something about the situation, the customer may feel you are only interested in pushing your product and be skeptical about your commitment to understand and address his/her needs.
